Exhibit highlights women’s fight to vote

It doesn’t hurt to be reminded that it has been less than a century since women in the U.S. gained the right to vote, and the Ladies' Library Association of Kalamazoo and the League of Women Voters of the Kalamazoo Area are hosting an exhibit this month to do just that.

Petticoat Patriots: How Michigan Women Won the Vote will be on display Sept. 12–19 at the Ladies' Library Association, 333 S. Park St. and is free and open to the public.

On loan from the Michigan Women’s Historical Center & Hall of Fame in Lansing, the exhibit will feature interactive elements, explore current barriers to women’s full participation in the political arena, and have an Honor Roll for visitors to record the names of suffragists in their own families and communities.

In conjunction with the exhibit, speakers Kevin Corder and Christina Wolbrecht will discuss “What Did Women Do with the Vote?” at 7 p.m. Sept. 11 in the Van Deusen Room of the Kalamazoo Public Library, 315 S. Rose S
