Since the 1960s, the annual juried exhibition celebrates the talented community of visual artists in the region. Drawing works from 14 counties, an experienced juror chooses artists from more than 300 submitted entries, ranging from paintings, prints, and photos to mosaics, ceramics, jewelry, sculpture, and mixed-media works. Honor the expertise of the mitten state during an opening reception on May 20, 2022.

The Forgotten Fights of the Kalamazoo Boxing Academy

Kalamazoo Valley Museum 230 N. Rose St., Kalamazoo, MI

Traces the history of the academy while focusing on fighters who recount their personal experiences, Feb. 5–Sept. 18.

Broken into 12 “rounds” in tribute to the structure of a boxing match, the exhibit will trace the history of the Kalamazoo Boxing Academy while focusing on fighters who recount their personal experiences there. Details about the gym and the communal living space at the house will be uncovered, along with stories about the fighting techniques and philosophies of the trainers that made the gym in Kalamazoo unique and successful.

Unveiling American Genius

This reimagining of the KIA permanent collection will illuminate the ingenuity and innovation that arise from all corners of American society. Unveiling American Genius demonstrates our commitment to an increasingly more inclusive and diverse representation of American artists within our holdings. The exhibition will explore key stories that women, African Americans, Latinx and other artists have told about our culture, art, and history.

Within this unique long-term presentation, viewers will see abstract and contemporary works, and reflections on traditional genres of painting, such as landscapes, still-lifes, and portraiture.

Colors! Shapes! Patterns!

The Upjohn Mason Grandchildren’s Gallery is awash in vivid colors, fun shapes, and interesting patterns – some of the fundamental building blocks of art. Let’s explore how artists have used these elements in different and unique ways. Do any of these shapes surprise you? Can simple colors make a realistic picture? Can a pattern evoke a feeling? Consider these elements and then see if you can identify them in our other galleries or even outside of the KIA!

Linling Lu: Musical Meditations

Linling Lu: Musical Meditations is an exhibition of recent and new works that continues the artist’s investigations and responses to sound and color. Inspired by various musical genres, such as Johann Sebastian Bach’s cello suites and Japanese Taiko master Eitetsu Hayashi’s drum piece, Fertility of the Sea, Lu channels these musical encounters, creating circular compositions that become physical manifestations of the music playing in her studio.

Wednesday Night Cruise–Ins

Wednesday Night Cruise-Ins at the Gilmore Car Museum have become an annual summer tradition from May through September! It is FREE to bring your collector car on the grounds during Cruise-In and the event is open to the public. On good weather nights, the fun starts at 5 pm and runs until 8 pm, with both George & Sally’s authentic 1941 Blue Moon Diner and The Grill serving hot dogs, hamburgers, and creamy old-fashioned custard throughout the evening.With live music providing the soundtrack, these are evenings you and your family won’t forget!
